Abstract

Objective:The effects of different message-framed interventions on college students' exercise intentions and behaviors were explored through two sub-experiments, a single and a long-term intervention. Methods:Experiment 1 selected 102 college students and used a 4 (information frames: positive, negative, joint, control) × 2 (preference of information attention: positive, negative) between-subjects design to assess changes in exercise intentions before and after the information intervention. Experiment 2 selected 52 university students and used a 2 (group: information intervention, control) × 5 (intervention period: baseline, 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 10 weeks and 12 weeks) mixed experimental design to clarify the quantitative and qualitative relationships between intervention period and exercise behaviors. Results:A single exercise-related information intervention enhanced college students'exercise intentions, and the positive and negative combined information interventions were the most effective, preference of information attention failed to modulate the effect of the information intervention on exercise intentions, and perceptions of exercise risk partially mediated the relationship between the information intervention and exercise intentions. The long-term joint information intervention had a significant improvement effect on the amount of exercise behaviors of college students, and the 6-week intervention had been able to achieve the optimal effect. Conclusion: Positive and negative jointed information can be preferred for the information intervention on exercise intentions and behaviors, and at the same time, moderately improving the level of perceptions exercise risk among college students also has a better predictive effect on their exercise intentions. In the selection of the cycle dose of jointed information intervention, three times a week for six weeks can better promote the exercise behaviors of college students.

Feasibility trials assess whether a behavior change program warrants a definite trial evaluation. This paper reports the feasibility of an intervention consisting of Self Determination Theory-informed text messages, pedometers, and goal prompts to increase adolescent physical activity.A 4-group randomized design with baseline and immediate post-study assessments was used. Groups (pedometer; pedometer + goal prompt; pedometer + goal prompt + theory-informed texts; no-treatment control) were systematically varied to assess the additive effect of intervention components on objectively measured physical activity (ie, ActiGraph). The primary outcome of the 12-week intervention was program feasibility. Changes in average daily step counts and minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity also were examined. Post-intervention research with a subset of participants examined program reactions.Participants (N = 160) were evenly split by sex, mostly 14-15 years old, and of diverse race/ethnicity. Feasibility criteria were met. The attrition rate was less than 2%. Modest increases in average daily step counts and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were observed in all groups except the control group. Participants reported positive reactions to the intervention. An intervention consisting of pedometers, theory-informed texts, and goal prompts, is a feasible and acceptable method for promoting physical activity to adolescents.

Low physical activity is an important risk factor for common physical and mental disorders. Physical activity interventions delivered via smartphones can help users maintain and increase physical activity, but outcomes have been mixed. Here we assessed the effects of sending daily motivational and feedback text messages in a microrandomized clinical trial on changes in physical activity from one day to the next in a student population. We included 93 participants who used a physical activity app, "DIAMANTE" for a period of 6 weeks. Every day, their phone pedometer passively tracked participants' steps. They were microrandomized to receive different types of motivational messages, based on a cognitive-behavioral framework, and feedback on their steps. We used generalized estimation equation models to test the effectiveness of feedback and motivational messages on changes in steps from one day to the next.Sending any versus no text message initially resulted in an increase in daily steps (729 steps, p =.012), but this effect decreased over time. A multivariate analysis evaluating each text message category separately showed that the initial positive effect was driven by the motivational messages though the effect was small and trend-wise significant (717 steps; p =.083), but not the feedback messages (-276 steps, p =.4).Sending motivational physical activity text messages based on a cognitive-behavioral framework may have a positive effect on increasing steps, but this decreases with time. Further work is needed to examine using personalization and contextualization to improve the efficacy of text-messaging interventions on physical activity outcomes.NCT04440553.© Society of Behavioral Medicine 2021. ROTHMAN A J, SALOVEY P. Shaping perceptions to motivate healthy behavior: The role of message framing[J]. Psychological Bulletin, 1997, 121(1):3-19.
Health-relevant communications can be framed in terms of the benefits (gains) or costs (losses) associated with a particular behavior, and the framing of such persuasive messages influences health decision making. Although to ask people to consider a health issue in terms of associated costs is considered an effective way to motivate behavior, empirical findings are inconsistent. In evaluating the effectiveness of framed health messages, investigators must appreciate the context in which health-related decisions are made. The influence of framed information on decision making is contingent on people, first, internalizing the advocated frame and, then, on the degree to which performing a health behavior is perceived as risky. The relative effectiveness of gain-framed or loss-framed appeals depends, in part, on whether a behavior serves an illness-detecting or a health-affirming function. Finally, the authors discuss the cognitive and affective processes that may mediate the influence of framed information on judgment and behavior.
