Sport for Sustainable Development in the Cause of Gender Equality: Formation, Content, Impact and Implications of the United Nations Consensus

Abstract

Gender equality is a key measure of social progress and an important goal for human beings to achieve sustainable development. With the implementation of “Transforming Our World-2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, the value of sport for the sustainable development of gender equality has been emphasized, and it has triggered a worldwide change in the concept of sport. Using the literature research method to explore the relationship between sport and the sustainable development of gender equality, we analyze the evolution of the United Nations’consensus on the promotion of sport for the sustainable development of gender equality and the impact it has had in the international community. The expected effects of the UN consensus on sport for the sustainable development of gender equality are summarized in three aspects: improving the physical fitness level of gender-disadvantaged people, promoting the popularization of the concept of gender equality in school physical education, and empowering women’s development. The analysis concludes that the implications for China are: 1) to emphasize the functional value of sport in promoting the sustainable development of gender equality; 2) to establish a basic guideline for the sustainable development of gender equality through sport; 3) to improve the legal system for the sustainable development of gender equality through sport; 4) to further create a cultural atmosphere for the promotion of gender equality through sport.
